HOME
I'm staring out into the night,
And trying to hide the pain.
I'm going to the place where love
and feeling good don't ever cost a thing,
And the pain you feel's a different kind of pain.
I'm going home to the place where I belong,
where your love has always been enough for me.
I'm running from you know I think you got me all wrong,
I don't regret this life I chose for me.
But these places and these faces are getting old,
So I'm going home.

Sunday, May 07, 2006 On being a brand
I was bored, and I was sick.
So being bored and sick, I clicked on the little internet browswer icon on my desktop and proceeded to entertain myself by checking out the various college websites. You know... rj, hcjc, acjc, srjc, cjc yadda yadda yadda. Most had websites that were pretty darn professional and made you drool with envy, or pound your chest with pride (if you were from that school, that is). Some had websites that were pretty alright, most managed by the students in the school but still decent-looking.
Then we had our website.
I hate to say this, but it pales in comparison to everyone else. It looks outdated and amatuerish, and makes me wince everytime I have to look at it longer that the mandatory 10 seconds it takes for another page to load in its place whenever I use the school com.
It makes sense to think that every college is a brand name, one that some have managed to market successfully, others not so successful. But whatever it is, a brand name's got to have all the goods if it wants to compete with the best. It may not necessarily be the best, but it's definately got to look good.
Look at nike. Many people lament that their goods are inferior and a serious waste of money, but that doesn't change the fact that it's the biggest manufacturer of sporting apparel and accessories in the world, hands down. You've got to admit, it might not be of the best quality, but it sure as hell is goodlooking and I mean, it's NIKE!
get the picture?
It's all about the image. I know that as an average college in a nation mad on results, that makes it kind tough for us to compete with the rest in terms of attraction power, but we sure can put up a better fight. It doesn't have to be a massive advertising campaign or something as extensive as renovating the school. But we can make progress by revamping our college website, the college newsletter, yearbook etc.
Looking good makes you feel better, you know?
Oh wells. Just an opinion. -shrugs.
